The word alone engenders visions of a string of unfortunates sitting on a stage all clucking like a chicken, but one must view hypnosis on a serious scale to understand it better.
Is hypnosis truly magic?
Contrary to popular opinion, hypnosis is not sleep, but rather it comprises of mental and perhaps physical relaxation, the removal of peripheral awareness, and finally the strong mental concentration on a particular subject, which is actually used to create the state where the mind is more receptive to receiving instructions or suggestions. As wonderful as it sounds, I can’t be hypnotised… Can I?
If you are of the mind that you cannot be hypnotized, let me make a few comments in passing and see if you agree with any of them.
Have you ever driven home or to work without any awareness at all of what you’ve seen during the drive? If nothing specific called your mind to it, such as seeing a horrid accident, or police cars whizzing by you, then you were in fact thoroughly hypnotized during that drive.
How about this question, have you ever found yourself nodding in agreement with someone speaking on the radio or on TV? That too is a form of hypnotic trance, which we are all capable of, but rarely acknowledge. Those in the field of hypnotherapy refer to this as “hypnotic suggestibility“.
Using my two examples and going a bit further with them, as you can see you were totally aware of the world around you when those instances happened, however your mind was preoccupied with something else. It had narrowed the field of awareness during that time. This means that even though you were a normal functioning person then, that you were made to concentrate on something else. Hence, you were hypnotized.
Now is there magic?
Imagine a Magician up on a stage. He shows the audience an empty hat, before reaching into it and pulling out a white rabbit.
To those who are unaware, the sleight of hand and illusion techniques the Magician has used looks entirely like magic. Unaware of all the intricacies “behind the scenes”, the rabbit just appeared. In reality however, the magician has specialist training which allows him to do his job in a way that many others do not understand.
Likewise, Hypnosis makes use of a person’s subconscious mind which also works “behind the scenes”, it can often appear like it is a kind of magic because of the rapid change work that people enjoy.
How Is Clinical Hypnotherapy Different?
