Sunbury was first settled in 1836, by George Evans and William Jackson. It was Jackson and his brother, Samuel, who gave the township it’s name of Sunbury.

Sunbury’s connection with the development and history of Victoria is largely influential due to its most powerful and famous resident, William “Big” Clarke. Clarke’s position as one of the biggest squatters in the entire colony and his position and power within the Victorian Legislative Council were crucial in the early days of Victoria.

The famous Sunbury mansion “Rupertswood” (pictured above) was built by Clarke’s son, William for his own son, Rupert.

Today the Rupertswood Football (AFL) team is responsible for supplying a number of AFL professional football players.
