Most people at one time or another show an interest in Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy, whether it stems from those telly experts like Paul McKenna or Derren Brown sparking their interest with their amazing skills or there is something in their lives they want to tackle/solve/change.
So what is hypnosis? Put simply it is a state of mind, a trance like state (enhanced relaxation of ones brain waves/altered state of mind) leading to a state of hyper-suggestibility, enabling our sub-concious mind to communicate with our conscious mind. Hypnotherapists like myself are then able to help give positive suggestions or alternatives to help with ones problems.
This state is a perfectly normal state that just about everyone experiences, a kind of auto pilot which you can liken to going to the supermarket and doing your shopping, getting to the check out and not knowing how you got there. Similarly, walking the dog round the block and getting home not realising the time it took. (Natural hypnotic state). This natural state exist when a person is deeply focused on something blocking everything else out.
It is important to realise that hypnosis is not dangerous and a hypnotherapist would never be able to suggest anything against a persons own moral, social or religous values. Hypnosis along with hypnotic suggestions and its uses can be traced back thousand of years and has been used in one form or another to help people change habits, tackle fear/phobias, stop habitual behaviour, overcome emotional problems, PTSD and a lot more of life’s daily problems.
According to the World Health Organization, 90% of the general population can be hypnotized. Some say only the insane can not be hypnotised, however, people who have experienced psychosis, epilepsy, depressive illness and indeed some breathing problems would find it contra-indicative.
