People who I call “hobby hypnotists” outnumber hypnosis professionals at a rate of about 4 to 1.
If you are looking to learn hypnosis, but aren’t planning to get very serious about the topic, you aren’t alone. I see a lot of hobby hypnotists who join my 1 day classes and sign up for my hypnosis masterclasses. There are far more regular everyday people looking to learn hypnosis, than there are professionals who are trying to integrate hypnosis into their careers. You would think my classes would be full of therapists who are seeking to add hypnosis to their practice, but the fact of the matter is that I train more hobby hypnotists.
I am happy that there are so many hobby hypnotists out there. I believe that everyone should know the basics of hypnosis. This is a skill that should be widespread, like the basics of first aid.
If teachers could understand how to use hypnotic suggestion, for example, they could productively guide their students. Of course, the same thing is true for parents. Parents would love to learn hypnosis so that they could use hypnotic suggestions on their kids. In fact, their strong desire to help their children would usually work successfully in most situations.
For example, I had a student who saw a woman get into a car accident while he was taking a walk. He used the hypnosis that he had learned to help reduce her anxiety and bleeding. Although he couldn’t help her medically, he was able to draw on his knowledge of hypnosis to do something positive in this situation.
Some friends of mine who I had taught hypnosis to hypnotized each other when they went to the Grand Canyon. They said that this greatly experienced their sensory impact of that day. Their experience was totally unforgettable due to the fact that they had taken the time to learn hypnosis beforehand.
I feel that if you want to learn hypnosis and use it just as a hobby, that is perfectly fine. This reminds me somewhat of people who are amateur magicians. Plenty of people practice magic at home and it never harms the business of magic. If you are interested in becoming a hobby hypnotist yourself, you can find more information about it at my website.
