Is self hypnosis difficult? And how do I use it?
Many people have heard of self-hypnosis but have no idea how to go about it. Strangely enough we self hypnotize daily, but are probably unaware of it.
For instance have you ever driven somewhere singing with the radio and gotten to your destination but been totally unaware of the places and people you passed? That’s because you were hypnotized. Do you get “lost” in movies, a good play, or a great book? You were hypnotized. You have even experienced a hypnotic phenomenon if you went after something in another room then thought of something that was important to you and when you got to the other room, you had no idea why you went in there, or what you were looking for? The reverse may have presented itself to you too, as you looked all over for your glasses, yet your eyes went right over them when you looked where you thought you left them. Here you were with your eyes wide open, experiencing a hypnotic moment!
OK so how do I go about it
The use of your imagination is actually self-hypnosis. A woman pretending that she is a movie star as she puts on her makeup is in hypnosis, as is the man who is pretending that the beautiful woman ahead of him in line is his lover. If the external world fades away from your awareness then your subconscious is open and is subject to take suggestions. Doing this for yourself is relatively easy. Sit in a room quietly, and begin to relax. Should intervening thoughts occur, tell yourself that you will take care of those later. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply and imagine your body from your toes on up losing any tension in it. Do this slowly for every part of your body.
Then imagine that you are at the top of a stair with exactly ten steps in it, the fifth down to the tenth is filled with cool soothing water and you begin to go down the steps very slowly concentrating on each step until you reach the bottom step and you can enjoy the floating sensation. Should you fail to feel floating or spinning start over, until you’ve mastered it.
You may then wish to visualize boxes under the water with numbers on them, one through three, and as you open each box you give yourself an affirmation, always making it a positive one, such as “I will sleep soundly tonight” and never a negative one such as “I won’t chew my nails anymore.” Take as long as you wish with the boxes, until you have opened each and remained calm. When you are done, climb back up the stairs, and say “I am wide awake now” open your eyes and do it again and again each day. When you sleep soundly you will know that you’ve experienced successful self hypnosis.
Taking up your own power
Once you have mastered this type of thought pattern and feel ready to move on, you can write yourself additional suggestions that you feel would heighten your life, such as visualizing yourself as a non-smoker, or a slim lithe person. With each suggestion, make sure you go all the way down into the pool of water, to open a box. Be sure and repeat this at least once daily, as the more practice you get the better you will reach your subconscious.
