Why does everyone talk about hypnosis as the main tool to stop smoking?
Maybe it’s because it seems to hold the most promise when compared to other methods. Let’s look at the alternatives:
You can try to quit on your own (2-5% success rate) Quit with nicotine patches or gum (about 25% success rate) Get a prescription for medication (also about 25% success rate) Or you can use hypnosis to quit smoking (up to 66% success rate).
You may even use hypnosis together with one of these other tools to increase your chances.
So why does hypnosis, seems to be the best method? There are lots of different theories, but the consensus of opinion is that it works on changing your beliefs about smoking. During hypnotherapy, you learn to relax your mind and body. While in a state of deep relaxation, you can assess your subconscious mind and start to re-programme the beliefs that are held there. Your subconscious mind is like a sponge waiting to absorb whatever you give it. So if you can imagine yourself as a non-smoker, your subconscious mind will accept that as reality.
Hypnosis for quitting smoking provides two main benefits. Firstly, through mind and body relaxation, it helps to reduce stress and teaches techniques for controlling stress, instead of reaching for a cigarette. Secondly, it effects a change in beliefs, attitude and associations towards smoking, leading to the elimination of the smoking habit.
So, if you’ve tried the gum, the patches, the medication and the will power, and you’re still smoking, then maybe it’s time to give hypnosis a try. What have you got to lose?
I used hypnosis to quit and as a hypnotherapist I went on to help hundreds of other people to do the same. I smoked my last cigarette ever on the 1st October 1994 and it was the best thing I ever did.
